RxP 101: Understanding Prescriptive Authority and the Evolving Role of Prescribing Psychologists

Join us for an informative session on prescribing psychology (RxP) as a specialty area of practice and advocacy initiative.

This workshop provides an overview of the development of prescribing psychology (RxP) as a specialty area of practice and advocacy initiative. Presenters will review the historical foundations of the RxP movement, current national status, and existing state and federal credentialing pathways. The session will describe education and training requirements, supervision standards, scope of practice parameters, and formulary considerations for prescribing psychologists. Presenters will also discuss key components of an effective RxP advocacy strategy, including legislative processes, regulatory requirements, and marketplace implications for professional practice.

As Maryland continues pursuing prescriptive authority legislation, this session offers timely insight into the education, advocacy, and policy considerations shaping the future of RxP nationwide.

Learning Objectives - At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

• Summarize the historical development and current status of prescriptive authority for psychologists.

• Describe the education, training, supervision, and scope of practice requirements for prescribing psychologists.

• Identify critical elements of an RxP advocacy strategy, including legislative, regulatory, and marketplace considerations.

Presenters:

Deborah Baker leads APA's Office of Professional Legal & Regulatory Affairs. Since joining APA in 2004, she has worked with state psychological associations, APA leadership, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders on issues including prescriptive authority, telehealth and digital therapeutics, and psychologist licensure and scope-of-practice standards. She has supported several APA task forces, including the work group revising APA's Guidelines on the Practice of Telepsychology, as well as past task forces that reviewed and revised APA policy on prescriptive authority and on the designation of psychopharmacology training programs for psychologists.

Dr. Elizabeth “Bethe” Lonning, PsyD, MSCP, helped lead the effort to pass Iowa's 2016 prescriptive authority (RxP) legislation, making Iowa the fourth state to grant appropriately trained psychologists the authority to prescribe medication. She chairs the Iowa Psychological Association's Psychopharmacology Committee and is a member of APA's RxP Designation Committee, as well as the Division 55 (Society for Prescribing Psychology) Training Director Council.
