MPAGS History

1956 –  Founding of MPA

1957 – 1995 – Informal involvement of graduate students in MPA

1996 –  With the mentoring of Dr. Steve Sobelman, Dr. Jan Fiske, and Dr. Jeffrey Barnett the MPA Graduate Student Committee was created as an ad hoc committee

  • 1st Internship Fair
  • Students begin attending MPA meetings and serve as monitors for continuing ed events
  • Students begin to author/co-author brief articles in The Maryland Psychologist

2002 –  MPA Board of Directors unanimously approved the creation of MPAGS and MPAGS elected its first set of officers.

2003 –  1st MPAGS Chair assumed position as a full voting member of MPA’s Board of Directors

2003 –  1st MPAGS Convention

2006 –  MPAGS Undergraduate Mentoring Program begins

2007 –  MPAGS is nominated by Dr. Barnett for the APAGS Award for Outstanding State, Provincial, or Territorial Psychological Association of the Year

  • Over 130 psychology graduate student members
  • MPAGS Board Members serve on MPA and APA boards, including voting rights
  • Campus representatives at the majority of colleges/universities
  • In process work on establishing faculty liaisons at MD academic institutions
  • Undergraduate mentoring program doubles in size
  • Yearly internship fairs
  • Numerous other activities and programs
