Presenter Bios

Mary K. Alvord, Ph.D., is Director of Alvord, Baker & Associates, LLC, a large group mental health practice with two offices in Maryland.  She is a licensed psychologist with more than 30 years of clinical experience and specializes in the treatment of children, adolescents and adults with anxiety disorders, and children and teens with ADHD and problems of emotional and behavioral regulation through individual and group therapy.  She is co-author (McGarrah, N.A., Alvord, M.K., Martin, J.M. & Haldeman, D.C.) of the 2009 article,  In the Public Eye: The Ethical Practice of Media Psychology, Professional Psychology:  Research and Practice, 40, 2, 172-180. Dr. Alvord is currently the APA Public Education Coordinator for MPA and as such promotes (with her committee) dissemination of public education information for Maryland, through media efforts, public education talks and participation in health fairs.  

Sophie Bethune
, is director of public relations and special projects at the American Psychological Association where she helps develop public relations and media strategy.  Sophie joined APA in 2007 after more than ten years advising clients on communications challenges – incorporating media relations, brand management, marketing communications, media training, message development and crisis communications.  Prior to joining APA she worked with associations, non-profits and corporate clients on media and public relations strategy in a range of industry sectors including transportation, education and politics.

Susan Bregman, Ph.D., is a psychologist in private practice in Lanham, MD, specializing in work with individuals, couples and families. She trained with Dr. Virginia Satir in the Washington D.C. area, Los Angeles and her last residential ten day seminar in Vancouver, B.C. Dr. Bregman has been conducting professional workshops on the Satir Growth Model since 1988 in the United States and Eastern Europe. She is past president of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists and is a faculty member at Anne Arundel Community College.

Catherine Busch, Ph.D., is a child clinical psychologist in private practice in Columbia since 1992 with specialties in psychological trauma, ADHD, and depression. She serves on the Maryland Psychological Association Board of Directors as Chair of Public Affairs, and she has participated in developing branding and communication strategies for MPA. Dr. Busch has been blogging since March, 2009 and writes on child psychology, mental health, trauma and related social issues. Dr. Deepan Chatterjee, Ph.D., is a Maryland licensed psychologist, as well as a certified Drug and Alcohol Supervisor in the state of Maryland.  He earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with a minor concentration in Developmental Psychology from Howard University in Washington D.C., in 2007, and completed his clinical internship and postdoctoral training at the Regimented Offenders Treatment Center (ROTC) program, intended for correctional inmates with a history of substance abuse, including co-occurring disorders at the maximum-security Patuxent Institution in Jessup, MD.  He then served as  the Clinical Supervisor for that program. Dr. Chatterjee currently works at the Greater Baltimore Counseling Center where he provides evaluation and therapy services to children, adolescents, adults and families.  He also serves as the Chair of the MPA Diversity Subcommittee and represents MPA as its diversity delegate to the annual APA State Leadership Conference. Dr. Chatterjee’s areas of expertise and interest include working with clients with mood and anxiety disorders, co-occurring disorders, stress management issues, as well as those needing crisis interventions. 

Juditb Glasser, Ph.D., is a child and family specialis twho conducts psychological assessments and provides treatment to children, adolescents and their families. She has been in practiceas a clinical psychologist in the Washington DCmetropolitan area for 27 years. A native Washingtonian, Dr. Glasser attended Oberlin College in Ohio where she obtained a BA in Psychology in 1972. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1979 from the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington D.C. For many years, she combined private practice with raising her two children who are now adults. She had a private practice in Springfield and Burke, Virginia for over 20 years, and joined the Chesapeake ADHD Cente rof Maryland in 2009.

Mary H. Guindon, Ph.D., is former chair and associate professor of the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Johns Hopkins University and holds a PhD from the University of Virginia . She has over twenty-five years experience in clinical practice, consulting, teaching, and administration; published in the professional and popular press; and presented nationally and internationally at professional conferences and symposiums.  Her edited book, Self-esteem across the lifespan: Issues and interventions (2010), and her text, A Counseling Primer (2011), are published by Routledge/Taylor&Francis.  Dr. Guindon maintains a private practice in executive, personal, and career coaching and consulting. 

David R. Leaman, Ed.D., is a licensed psychologist in the states of Pennsylvania and Maryland. He is a former public school teacher and wrestling coach.  He has been in private practice in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania since 1981, with specialties in marriage and family therapy, adolescent psychology and forensic psychology. He has conducted anger management seminars for educators and mental health counselors during the last ten years, in a variety of settings. He has published several articles in professional journals as well as a book entitled: Making Decisions: A Guide For Couples.  Dr. Leaman and his wife have been conducting marriage enrichment seminars for over 35 years.  Together they have two children and three grandchildren.

Jay I. Levinson, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Levinson has lectured internationally and served on the faculties of both the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is the only person to publish research integrating the theories of Dr. Viktor Frankl (meaning in life) and Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross (meaning in death). Dr. Levinson served as Special Assistant, colleague and friend to Dr. Frankl for over 20 years and edited his most recent book, Mans' Search for Ultimate Meaning. In addition, Dr.Levinson's first book, co-edited with Dr. Alexander Batthyany, Existential Psychotherapy of Meaning; Handbook of Logotherapy and Existential Analysis, was published in May 2009. In an effort to give of himself to the community, Dr. Levinson has worked for many charitable foundations and is the founder of the Baltimore Ronald McDonald House.

Monica Mann-Wrobel, Ph.D., received her doctoral degree from the University of Maryland and is currently a Psychology Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) at the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The primary focus of Dr. Mann-Wrobel's research has been on the psychophysiology and neuropsychology of social functioning among individuals with schizophrenia. She conducts her clinical work with the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) program at the Baltimore VA, an outpatient program for substance abuse disorders and PTSD. Dr. Mann Wrobel is currently pursuing a research project examining core components of ACT and mindfulness processes within the ACTprogram.

Jill Penaloza, MS.Ed. ATR-BC, CGP, is a board certified Art Therapist and a certified Group Psychotherapist in private practice in Annapolis, Maryland. She has practiced individual, family and group psychotherapy since 1995. Jill earned her Masters Degree from Nazareth College of Rochester of New York, and has worked in a variety of settings including hospitals, schools, outpatient clinics, and community organizations. Jill is currently in private practice in Annapolis, MD, where she sees individuals and families and leads expressive CBT groups based on mindfulness practice. In addition to her private practice, Jill has worked with executive teams throughout the United States implementing organizational cultural change through belief system alignment.

John Spiegel, J.D., an experienced family-law attorney, has devoted his practice exclusively to divorce mediation since 1996. Mr. Spiegelis a graduate of Yale Law Schooland has long been active as a mediation trainer and presenterin Maryland and nationally. Heserved in 2003 and 2004 as President of the Maryland Council for Dispute Resolution and in 2005- 2008 as Presidentof the Montgomery County Divorce Round table. Previously, Mr. Spiegel taught juvenile law as an Adjunct Professor of Law at American University.

Cheryl Rubenstein, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Annapolis, MD.  Before moving to Annapolis, she did clinical research on the treatment of eating, anxiety and mood disorders at the NIMH and on weight management in children and adults at Georgetown University Hospital Center and The Uniformed Service University of Health Sciences.  She received her doctorate from The American University in Washington, DC in 1998 and completed a two years of post-graduate training in the Clinical Program on Psychotherapy Practice at the Washington School  of Psychiatry in 2004.

Ferrier R. Stillman, Esq., is a partner and co-chair of the Family Law Department at Tydings & Rosenberg LLP. She represents men and women in a variety of complex domestic relations matters throughout Maryland. She handles cases involving valuations of businesses and other aspects of property division; custody disputes (including international and interstate); alimony and child support; premarital agreements; and adoptions. In 2006 and 2008, Ms. Stillman was named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women by The Daily Record. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree Phi Beta Kappa from Vassar College in 1984 and her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1987.
