The Post-Doctoral Fellowship in The Trauma Disorders Program at Sheppard Pratt Health System is an intensive one-year training program in the evaluation and treatment of patients with dissociative and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD). The primary training experience involves serving as a therapist on a multi-disciplinary inpatient unit for patients with histories of complex trauma. In addition to placement on the inpatient unit, postdocs are also trained in conducting outpatient psychotherapy and in providing specialized evaluations and consultations for patients with dissociative disorders and PTSD.



Training in this program includes:

  • Instruction in phase-oriented approach to trauma treatment
  • Strong psychodynamic training incorporated with the use of cognitive behavioral techniques
  • Specialized psychological testing
  • Hypnotherapy techniques
  • Group psychotherapy
  • Experience in long-term psychodynamic therapy



Inpatient Clinical Services

Postdocs in The Trauma Disorders Program receive four to six formal hours of weekly supervision, including a didactic seminar on the evaluation and treatment of trauma disorders.

The Child Psychiatrist works closely with and receives general policy direction as well as guidance from the Director and Deputy Director of Mental Health Services and the Medical Director. Providing the Department of State with a safe and health workforce able to promote the interests of the American people abroad is the ultimate of scope of effect of a successful contractor in this position. Qualified Candidates MUST have:

Job Description Duties:

  • Conduct intensive case reviews for and rendering recommendations about Foreign Service personnel to assist with treatment and medical clearances decisions.
  • In conjunction with other staff members, support employees and family members evacuated for psychiatric illness; monitor care and treatment. Candidate also works with a clinical team to facilitate local care referrals for child mental health care.
  • Work closely with the Child and Family Program Team Leader to assess eligibility for access to the Special Needs Educational Allowances (SNEA) which provides funding and oversight of educational services utilized by dependent children with special educational needs overseas.
  • Be engaged in a multi-disciplinary team approach to case management which may include video conferencing with patients and providers overseas, documentation and upkeep of medical records/database, and clinical supervision of other mental health professionals.
  • Liaise with other departments and agencies to educate them about State programs for children via public speaking, video conferencing, or review of written materials that may be distributed to employees and families.
  • Maintain existing databases.
  • Contribute to the development of short and long term goals and programming for the Child and Family Program.

Security Requirement: Candidate will be REQUIRED to obtain a SECRET Security Clearance.

  • Extensive background in performing psychiatric evaluations of children, adolescents, teens and adults.

Must be able to integrate clinical, administrative, and managerial skills in order to support a mental health program essential to the maintenance of an effective overseas Foreign Service Corps.
  • Must able to manage a wide range of mental health services for a diverse population overseas and provide expert guidance to Foreign Service Medical Officers and other health practitioners with varying backgrounds and levels of training. Must have experience that includes an extensive background in performing in-depth psychological evaluations of adults, children and families. Must have an up-to-date familiarity with psychotropic medications in current usage.
  • Ability to apply systems theory and work tactfully and cooperatively at all levels in order to provide effective consultation to supervisors, managers and employees. Previous experience in government positions highly desirable. Knowledge of guidelines and professional ethics standards related to medical documentation.
  • Candidate should be versed in or willing to learn the medical regulations and policies of the Department of State. Must possess a high degree of integrity, decisiveness, and fairness in order equitably to apply the regulations and policies of the medical program to all eligible persons. Knowledge of developmental delays in children, including learning disabilities is a critical factor.
  • Knowledge of resource network for the evaluation of children with special needs and facility in working with schools in the U.S. and overseas which have special education services.
